Beirut, Lebanon Nov. 2018 The Shatila Refugee Camp

CTC Photography was recently on assignment in Beirut, Lebanon. The tasks were to shoot a music video and to capture some stills. Constructed in 1949 by the red Cross, in order to host several hundred Palestinian refugees… it now today hosts between 20-40,000 people… in an area roughly 1 kilometer squared. In a country where approximately 60% of people live below the poverty line… the conditions within the camp’s damp concrete walls, are staggering. The camp is a testament of what can happen to neglected refugees, in a country that tries to ignore them. Electricity is scarce and comes and goes irregularly. The running water that you can find is salty and undrinkable. Nobody wants to live there… who would when you are deprived of your basic human rights? Unable to get working permits and not eligible for regular housing… the residents watch the days fade in to the next. The residents are “stateless”… have no real rights… have very little protection… and are left with little to no hope. A very memorable trip, and one that was a firm reminder of just how lucky we are as humans to be born in to the lives we find ourselves in. Remember gratitude.
